{"id":2550,"date":"2016-10-19T11:26:53","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T01:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sos.asn.au\/?p=2550"},"modified":"2017-10-31T12:17:01","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T02:17:01","slug":"council-candidates-speak-up-victorians-unhappy-with-direction-of-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sos.asn.au\/vic\/2016\/10\/19\/council-candidates-speak-up-victorians-unhappy-with-direction-of-planning\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Candidate Survey finds Victorians unhappy with\u00a0direction of planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SOS MEDIA RELEASE,\u00a0 October 14, 2016:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Our state wide\u00a0survey of council candidates for local government elections on 22 October indicates\u00a0widespread community concern with the management and direction of planning in\u00a0Victoria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To date,\u00a0about 450 candidates, from all backgrounds and political persuasion, have\u00a0responded. The Survey is live and will continue until Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates\u00a0were first asked to list main local governance and planning issues in their\u00a0area, providing a snapshot of key local issues across the State and revealing many\u00a0common concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Questions\u00a0on improved governance received overwhelming support:<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a090% said we needed more transparency<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a085% support political donations reform<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a075% support stronger enforcement of permit\u00a0conditions and oversight of building quality<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a070% said Council need more standardised\u00a0financial reporting<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a060% support tighter planning controls to protect\u00a0residents<\/p>\n<p>Views\u00a0were mixed on the benefit of the current development boom for housing\u00a0affordability.<br \/>\nViews\u00a0were also mixed on how to prioritise competing issues, such as &#8220;economic\u00a0activity through construction&#8221; and long term environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates\u00a0were asked about the vexed issue of political affiliation. Despite public\u00a0interest and concern, there is much secrecy and little public information on\u00a0political affiliation in Victoria.<br \/>\nCandidates\u00a0responded about 64% with no affiliation, 8% Liberal, 13% Labor, 11% Green, 6%\u00a0other.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates\u00a0were finally asked to give their view on &#8220;How happy do you think your\u00a0local residents are with the way Victoria is being developed?&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a027% &#8220;Very unhappy and concerned&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a026% &#8220;Moderately unhappy&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a027% said they thought that Victorians were\u00a0unsure<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a018% &#8220;Moderately happy&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a02% &#8221; Very happy&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0the community survey has limitations due to bias and self selection, it is\u00a0indicative of serious community concern and unhappiness with the direction of\u00a0planning in Victoria.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">SOS\u00a0members are concerned that Victoria\u2019s liveability is being diminished by poor\u00a0quality, poorly designed or excessive development. Inclusive local\u00a0communities, local shops, safe streets and caring communities are not\u00a0valued, let\u00a0alone protected.\u00a0Victorians\u00a0from across the State, from different political spectrum and all\u00a0backgrounds seem to share our concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0survey is supported by over two dozen community groups.
