{"id":434,"date":"2008-03-15T09:32:29","date_gmt":"2008-03-14T23:32:29","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"deakinunihasstruckagainwithoutanycommunityinvolvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sos.asn.au\/vic\/2008\/03\/15\/deakinunihasstruckagainwithoutanycommunityinvolvement\/","title":{"rendered":"Deakin Uni has &#8216;struck again&#8217; without any community involvement."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SOS has received this from WERA (West of Elgar Residents\u2019 Association) &#8211; they have had many many problems with Deakin University&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>WERA:<br \/>\nDeakin Uni has &#8216;struck again&#8217; without any community involvement.<br \/>\nThey are suddenly on the Whitehorse Council Agenda for Monday night [3 days notice for us!], seeking to build their &#8220;Interconnect&#8221; -actually a high level bridge that will carry maintenance vehicles across the Gardiner&#8217;s Creek valley parkland.<br \/>\n<!--break--><\/p>\n<p>Our email to Council &#8211; <\/p>\n<p>West of Elgar Residents\u2019 Association Inc.<br \/>\nW E R A<br \/>\nA.N.:A0031410U<br \/>\nTo    :   ALL COUNCILLORS, CITY OF WHITEHORSE<br \/>\nRE : Council Meeting of 17 March 2008 and Item 10.2.4<br \/>\nDeakin University Interconnect Project<\/p>\n<p>This dot point note is being sent to you now &#8211; WERA is planning to prepare a more detailed letter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please do NOT support Deakin University\u2019s application as put before you at this meeting.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WERA strongly supports the retention of ALL of the Gardiner\u2019s Creek Reserve as Public Open Space<\/p>\n<p>We are therefore opposed to the placement of a bridge  in the park and the alienation of a central section of the park to an outside interest.<\/p>\n<p>WERA puts forward the following points to  support our request to you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WERA, together with CROWAG [Combined Residents Organisation of Whitehorse Action Group], have consistently opposed the proposed Interconnect. These are your resident community who feel strongly about open space in Whitehorse. At two public meetings held about the proposed Interconnect, not one resident spoke in favour. <\/li>\n<li> <\/li>\n<li>Deakin University\u2019s \u201cPublic Consultation\u201d [mentioned in your agenda] was a farce. \u201cOptions\u201d were displayed, but community involvement never occurred&#8230;..          The pylons of the bridge were there beforehand &#8230;&#8230;. And the community was unable to discover what happened to those \u201coptions\u201d &#8230;&#8230;And a prize was awarded within weeks for a bridge built to fit the pylon specifications!!   &#8230;&#8230; <\/li>\n<li> <\/li>\n<li>Further \u2026\u2026. Historically, Deakin University\u2019s relationship with the community has been poor. There is a longstanding sense of distrust among residents. <\/li>\n<li> <\/li>\n<li>Whitehorse Open Space Strategy is now Council Policy. In this, the Gardiner\u2019s Creek Reserve has a high priority. <\/li>\n<li> <\/li>\n<li>Legislative Council Select Committee on the Sale and Alienation of Public Land.
