{"id":519,"date":"2010-11-23T06:56:26","date_gmt":"2010-11-22T20:56:26","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"greenstopsosplanningsurvey-mediarelease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sos.asn.au\/vic\/2010\/11\/23\/greenstopsosplanningsurvey-mediarelease\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens top SOS planning survey &#8211; media release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SOS MEDIA RELEASE <br \/>\n23 November 2010&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: larger;\">Greens top SOS planning survey <\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nResidents&rsquo; lobby group Save Our Suburbs has welcomed the Greens commitment to <br \/>\nintroduce more prescription, transparency and certainty into Melbourne&rsquo;s planning <br \/>\nregime, along with a greater role for councils and communities in planning decisions. <br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe Greens and the Liberals were the only parties to respond to a survey conducted <br \/>\nby Save Our Suburbs which sought a response from each of the three major parties <br \/>\nto their Position Statement on town planning issues.&nbsp; Planning Minister Justin Madden <br \/>\nfailed to respond.&nbsp; [<em>For detailed responses see &lt;<\/em><u><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sos.asn.au\/vic\/sosnewsletters-387\"><u><em>SOS&nbsp;Newsletter #28 Nov.10<\/em><\/u><\/a><\/em><\/u> <em>&gt;<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p>\nSOS President Ian Wood said that the Greens response would meet the concerns of <br \/>\nMelbourne residents that their views on planning matters were not being heard. <br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&ldquo;However, the Greens aren&#8217;t likely to be in a position to directly implement their <br \/>\npolicies. But with more seats in the Upper House and possibly the Lower House, we&rsquo;ll <br \/>\nexpect them to at least ensure a lot more transparency and accountability, no matter <br \/>\nwho gets elected next weekend&rdquo;, he said. <br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhile SOS also applauded the Liberals&rsquo; support for a new planning policy for <br \/>\nMelbourne, the group is concerned at the Liberals&rsquo; lack of commitment to curbing <br \/>\nurban sprawl or to more democratic reform of planning and local government <br \/>\nlegislation. <br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&ldquo;Based on the Liberals&rsquo; response to our survey, they wouldn&rsquo;t be making planning <br \/>\ncontrols mandatory or funding a fully-integrated metro-wide public transport system. <br \/>\nBut neither would Labor, based on it&rsquo;s last few years in office.&nbsp; The community has <br \/>\nbeen sidelined on planning issues and even councils have largely been ignored&rdquo;, Mr <br \/>\nWood stated. <br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&ldquo;And right after the election we&#8217;ll face a combination of new changes to the planning <br \/>\nact removing council controls over large high-density development sites along public <br \/>\ntransport routes.
